Zoey Light Memorial Scholarship

The Zoey Light Memorial Scholarship will be awarded in the amount of $1000 annually to one Beekmantown high school graduate and one Saranac high school graduate.  Applicants must submit an essay depicting an example of kindness that has impacted his/her life. Lists of acts of kindness are not required, rather a detailed account of how the applicant was greatly inspired, changed, or affected by kindness. This could be a time when the applicant showed kindness to another, or a time when someone was kind to the applicant.

A winner will be selected by Zoey’s parents, Tiffani and Joseph Light, with the help of their families. Applicant names will be kept private from the selection team.

Applications are due by June 2, 2025

Tiffani Light shares insight into the scholarship

“I attended the Beekmantown School District from Kindergarten until the day I graduated. I have spent eight of my eleven years of teaching back in the district and have even been lucky enough to teach with many teachers who taught me. My own second grade teacher and now colleague at Cumberland Head, Jodi Morrow, reached out to see if we would be okay with a scholarship fund being started in Zoey’s name. We were humbled, speechless, and eager to say yes. We have not been asked to lift a finger in the planning and many hours of work that have been put into creating this special day for the community in memory of our “ZoZo”.

A tragic loss like this puts so much into perspective. I think back to all of the scholarships that I applied for as a high school senior, and while all are wonderful and commendable, I realized when I left the North Country for college that so many of the stipulations just didn’t matter anymore. Nobody asked what my GPA had been, what sports I had played, or even what clubs I had belonged to. There is so much to be said for hard work, dedication, and community service but once you are out in that great big world you will be most remembered by others for how you make them feel. Zoey made us feel nothing but joy each and every day.

We did not get the chance to learn Zoey’s interests. Would she have been an athlete? Star of the school play? In the band? A straight “A” student or one who had to work her hardest just to pass? There is no way to know. What we did know is that her smile was infectious and her giggle could brighten even the darkest of days. Being an innocent baby meant she never had a bad thought about anyone, had never hurt anyone’s feelings, and had never committed a “wrong” in her short little life. She was nothing but kind to everyone and anyone.

So yes joy, kindness, and Beekmantown. Because as someone recently said to me “Once an eagle always an eagle.”
